The New Harvest 2009

Design Flanders is constantly on the look-out for new design talent. This summer, you can see the result of the search in 2009 in the Design Flanders Gallery. Young and some slightly less young designers share the space and they are more than ready to surprise you with their fresh, innovative work.
The designers are working in a contemporary and high-quality manner with ceramics, textile, jewelry, glass, Furniture, service design, graphics and industrial desing, etc.
Designers become part of Design Flanders by participating at the Spring and Autumn Selections, where their work is shown to a jury of experts. Designers that are creative, refreshing and innovative, become part of the Design Flanders’ database.

What can you expect from the newly recognized designers? Some examples:

At present she is investigating the possibilities of granulation. She wanted to get away from the constraint by which the tiny granules always follow the shape of the base, and went in search of a technique in which the granules themselves create a shape or pattern. This brought her into contact with Rapid Prototyping, SLS (selective laser sintering). (on the work of Stefanie Condes)

Over time he has built up his world image by collecting, cutting and piecing elements together, and this is something we see in his creative process. As an artist he comments on the world around him in his own language. (Pascale Matuscak on the work of Jan Marechal)

She takes her inspiration from everyday reality. This she combines with colour, words, imagination, tales and flowers. She is the ultimate collector who puts together her own world through photography, cutting, pasting and drawing. A world which, though mostly playful and full of colour, can at times seem quite austere. The lively and imaginative is never without content, and the serious is never without a wink. This leads to a wide variety of products: from shawls and handbags, through lampshades, carpets and tablecloths to play mats, party games, cuddly toys, badges and brooches. (on the work of Lotte Martens)

"Today more than ever a good product has to satisfy the countless needs of the demanding user (and rightly so), but at the same time communicate if not strengthen the brand values for the company (…)". (David Pas on his work)

Her work consists of crockery, most of which is made on the potter’s wheel, the rectangular dishes being pressed in moulds. From the very beginning she decided not to go for industrial-scale pressing and casting but developed a way of producing tactile and impassioned objects for everyday use. (on the work of Anne Perneel)

Tuur Van Balen (born 1981) uses designs in a speculative and critical manner to explore the possible cultural, social and ethical implications of new technologies, i.e. biotechnology and synthetic biology.
Van Balen's designs are not intended for sale in the shops. Rather than use design to make technology sexy, saleable and user-friendly, he uses the 'language of design' to raise questions, entertain or provoke. Design can make abstract subjects tangible and translate them into everyday reality, even if this reality does not yet exist. This makes design a powerful way of exploring the implications of new technologies, even if the applications are not yet entirely clear. (on the work of Tuur Van Balen)

Frank Sveid (or Sweijd, born 1944), a self-taught man, has been a designer since 1973. His main idea is to develop original and timeless furniture and other objects with new uses. They are usually patented and protected as a “model”.
Sveid aims, in line with the current principles of sustainability, to design precious objects which can be passed on, worn or used from generation to generation. (on the work of Frank Sveid)
